Diario Armenia of South America launches its international coverage of the Artsakh war

Diario Armenia, the oldest Armenian newspaper of South America, launched its international coverage of the Artsakh war with two journalists with press accreditation in Stepanakert.

Betty Arslanian and Leo Moumdjian, two journalists from Argentina, traveled to Artsakh as correspondents of Diario Armenia to cover the conflict and report to the Spanish-speaking public the news about the ongoing war. Starting from today, those videos can also be seen with English translation.

Both journalists visited an attacked hospital, the Ghazanchetsots Cathedral and many other places collecting stories from the people who live there.

Third rally of the Armenian community of Argentina for the international recognition of Artsakh

The Armenian community of Argentina organized a demonstration in front of the Turkish Ambassador in Argentina residence under heavy rain on the night of October 19 to ask for international recognition of the Republic of Artsakh, Diario Armenia reported.

“This war is unique for its violence, scale and potential for expansion in a world in crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” denounced Horacio Terzian, the speaker of the protest on behalf of IARA - Armenian Institutions of the Argentine Republic.

“After Syria, Libya, Greece, Cyprus, and the eastern Mediterranean, the self proclaimed 'Sultan' Recep Tayyip Erdogan sets fire to the Caucasus, initiates another focus of conflict, creates a vanguard of jihadist terrorism and activates his diplomacy to consolidate another area of ​​influence where he concentrates the power of decision between war and peace,” added Terzian.

“Turkey and Azerbaijan threaten world peace, and the Armenians in Artsakh today resist the neo-Ottoman expansion, as the Austrians did in Vienna in 1638 when they stopped the advance of Erdogan's ancestors towards Europe, saving the civilization from barbarism,; as the brave Kurdish fighters did in Kobane in 2015, stopping the offensive of the hordes of the Islamic State supported by the Turkish military; but above all like the united Armenians who in Baku in August-September 1918 resisted the advance of the Turkish-Azeri coalition of forces under the command of Nuri Pasha”, he recalled. "This is not a simple war: this is a new threat of genocide in the ongoing Pan-Turkism project."

Since Azerbaijan and Turkey began the war against Artsakh and Armenia, the Armenian community of Argentina organized various actions to make the conflict visible. The Armenian Community of Argentina rallied again to the Embassies of Turkey and Azerbaijan

The Armenian community of Argentina rallied on October 10 to the Turkish and Azerbaijani Embassies in Buenos Aires, hours after the news of the humanitarian truce reached by Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The demonstration was organized by Armenian Institutions of the Argentine Republic (IARA), a space that coordinates all Armenian institutions of the community, Diario Armenia reported.

At the Embassy of Azerbaijan, the youth of the community read a joint statement in Spanish and Armenian: "Whereas the dictator Ilham Aliyev orders to bomb Stepanakert, Shushi and other cities, not caring about civilian deaths, Artsakh President Arayik Harutyunyan tells the world that 'the war is not against the people of Azerbaijan', making clear the differences between one and the other."

In front of the Turkish Embassy, ​​the community youth denounced that "Turkey is the same State that perpetrated the genocide against the Armenians, Assyrians and Pontic Greeks 105 years ago."

"The Armenians of Artsakh are neither the aggressors nor are they 'separatists', as they are misrepresented by some media. Argentine-Armenians Rally to Turkish and Azerbaijani Embassies in Buenos Aires

On the afternoon of Saturday, October 3, a rally was held to the Embassies of Azerbaijan and Turkey in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to demand an immediate halt to the attacks against Artsakh and Armenia.

Agustín Analian delivered a speech in which he denounced that Azerbaijan and Turkey "want their people to believe that by winning a war that no one wants to fight, they will perpetuate themselves in power." "They are wrong! History will judge them in the worst way."

"This protest is being made in all parts of the world against their violence. "We are the generations of Armenians who took refuge in Argentina escaping from the genocide. We know what they want to achieve by attacking the civilian population: they want to end the Armenian people. They want to repeat history, but that is not going to happen," said Analian.

The protest was organized by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, Homenetmen South America, Armenian Relief Society of South America, Armenian Youth Federation of South America and Hamazkayin.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, presented a strong defense of Nagorno-Karabakh

 

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, published a letter sent to the Ambassador of Azerbaijan in the United States, Elin Suleymanov, in which he affirms that there is “clear evidence” of the “complete responsibility” of Azerbaijan in the “aggression and escalation of the conflict”. With this document, the OAS is positioned as the international organizations that provided one of the greatest political support to Artsakh and Armenia, Diario Armenia reported.

“During the last five years, we have followed closely the unilateral arms race of your country; it was a matter of deep concern because that escalation was undoubtedly the preparation for this armed aggression launched by Azerbaijan. There is clear evidence of your full responsibility regarding the aggression and the escalation of the conflict”, said Almagro.

“A statement was made by France with evidence that Turkey sent 300 ISIS-affiliated Islamists to join Azeri military in the conflict”, he added.

“It is also alarming that the United States Defense Department has confirmed the presence of hundreds of Syrian mercenaries from Turkey to support Azerbaijan. Additionally, in the recent meeting at the summit of the Twenty-Seven in Brussels, European leaders have denounced any external interference. The proof related to the participation of the Turkish air force in the conflict is absolutely condemnable”, said the letter.

“Armenia has already expressed their willingness to accept a negotiation, it is now your responsibility towards international peace and stability to accept the same. Furthermore, the statement that you reference in your letter was issued by the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (GS/OAS), which I have the honor to lead, and stated its strong condemnation of military aggression, especially those attacks directed towards civilians, and called for cessation of hostilities. I do not see how the nature of such statement is at odds with the principles and values of the OAS, or of the United Nations system at large”, mentioned Almagro.

“The core message of self-determination -a principle that you have decided to ignore- the peaceful resolution of conflicts -mother principle that you have decided to ignore-, and promotion of peace and stability contained in the declaration is absolutely compatible with the values and the activities of the OAS”.

“What I do consider incompatible with the principles of self-determination and peace and stability, are both the recent military attacks towards civilians in Nagorno-Karabakh and the foreign variables intervening and threatening a negotiation process. Just today the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia reported that civilian infrastructure is being targeted in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the Armenian government, these criminal attacks against civilians were carried out by your country alongside Turkish military specialists. As we stated in our decimation on September 27, 2020, the practice of attacking civilians as military targets must be banished and constitutes a complete violation of most basic mles governing armed conflict”.

“The GS/OAS stands by its declaration regarding the recent military aggression in Nagorno-Karabakh (Reference: E-098/20) and reiterates the need to rescue and reactivate the negotiation process led by the authorities of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Minsk Group (OSCE Minsk Group). We believe that this conflict can only be solved through a negotiation process based on international law and the principles established in the Helsinki Accords”. Finally, Almagro expressed “again my sincere condolences to the victims of the violent clashes between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces”.

The Azeri complaint came after a September 27 statement in which Almagro “strongly condemned Azerbaijan’s recent military aggression in Nagorno-Karabakh, which directly ignores the calls of the United Nations to achieve peaceful solutions to the conflicts, as well as to promote lasting peace and stability”.

Luis Almagro is a great supporter of the Armenian Cause. As Foreign Minister of Uruguay, Almagro made in 2011 a historic position demanding the recognition of Nagorno Karabakh. In 2016, also as Secretary General of the OAS, he condemned Azerbaijan during the “Four Days War”. A year earlier, in 2015, as Chancellor of Uruguay he requested “recognition in the international concert of nations” of Karabakh.

Argentine Foreign Minister Felipe Sola: The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict "hurts me in a special way"

Argentine Foreign Minister Felipe Solá made strong statements on the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh on October 1 at a conference of the Inter-American Council for Trade and Production.

"We have the 3rd most important Armenian community in the world, after the United States and France. For this reason, I asked the Argentine Ambassador in Washington 3 days ago to initiate contacts to find out if on behalf of the Armenian communities we can get together so that the three largest Armenian communities could additionally request a ceasefire," said the Argentine Foreign Minister.

"At this moment two things are happening: first, Azerbaijan has greater war power, it is richer as a country and it has the material and concrete support of Turkey. Instead, Armenia has the support of the Minsk Group in terms of seeking a ceasefire, which is what Armenia is asking for", explained Sola.

"It hurts me personally in a special way. As Chancellor, I cannot go beyond this. But we do say that we will try to insist on the ceasefire and be in permanent contact with our Embassy in Armenia. This escalation must stop now," he added.

In that sense, Felipe Sola recalled that "there was a war in which Armenia triumphed. Nagorno-Karabakh is an enclave that now wants to be independent in some cases, but that has an Armenian culture, an Armenian language, an Armenian education and Armenian grandparents. Armenia won that place for itself, although later the forces that achieved peace for them, turned it into an independent territory".

"We are very concerned and I understand Eduardo Eurnekian's concern, I have received calls from all my friends. I have two Armenians out of ten - which is quite a lot - on an honorary foreign policy council: Juan Gabriel Tokatlian and Adolfo Koutoudjian. Act in front of the Armenian Embassy of Argentina in support of the Armenian people

The Chilean Chamber of Deputies issued a historic resolution in support of Artsakh

The Chilean Chamber of Deputies issued a resolution in support of Artsakh on October 1.

The Chilean parliamentary body asked the President to "inform Azerbaijan, Armenia and the territory of Nagorno Karabakh that Chile wants the attacks to cease immediately and to persist in the search for a peaceful, legal and historical solution to the conflict, within the framework of the United Nations and international organizations, adjusting to International Law under its principles of prohibition of the use of force, respect for the sovereignty of nations, self-determination of peoples and peaceful settlement of disputes".

Armenian Demonstration in Sao Paulo

On Wednesday, September 30, a demonstration was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in rejection of the attack by Azerbaijan and Turkey against Artsakh and Armenia.

The Government of Uruguay expressed its "concern" at the escalation of the conflict in Artsakh

A group of Argentine-Armenians held a protest in front of the Embassy of Azerbaijan

A group of Argentine-Armenians held a protest in front of the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Buenos Aires on Friday, July 24.

About 100 people participated in the act, as the institutions of the Armenian community didn't formally summon anybody since Argentina is in a strict quarantine due to a growth in the cases of COVID-19. Protesters carried flags and sang songs in front of the Embassy to protest Azerbaijan's recent attacks to Armenia.

Next Monday, July 27, the Armenian Youth Federation of Uruguay will carry out an urban protest intervention in Montevideo.

South American Politicians Express their Support for Armenia after the Azerbaijani Attacks

A number of politicians from Uruguay and Argentina expressed their support for Armenia after the news of the escalation of the conflict with Azerbaijan.

“Together for Children”, an Armenian Concert with Major Artists to Raise Funds for City of Smile Foundation

The online concert “United for Children” will take place next Saturday, July 4 at 10 pm in Armenia with artists from all over the world to help raise funds for the NGO City of Smile, led by the First Lady of Armenia, Anna Hakobyan.

The event is produced by the Argentine journalist Leo Moumdjian and will will feature artists like the violinist Ara Malikian (Spain), the musician Ara Gevorgyan (Armenia), Harout Pamboukjian (United States), Rosy Armen (France), Sebu Simonian (USA), Sibil (Turkey), Lena Chamamyan (Syria), Elie Berberian (Canada), Conjunto Kusan (Argentina), the filmmaker Serge Avedikian (France), the pianist Serouj Kradjian (Canada), the comedians Kev Orkian (Kingdom Kingdom), Vahe Berberian (USA), Alvaro Hagopian (Uruguay) and New Docta (USA). The concert will help raise funds for the charitable foundation City of Smile, created to support people with cancer and blood diseases.

The show will last around an hour and a half, during which time each artist will perform a song, thus putting together a tour from different parts of the planet. In addition to YouTube, it will also be broadcasted on Armenian public television: “I was encouraged to contact them and they were interested in having a product of this quality. It is a small pride that from Argentina we can produce audiovisual material and travel the world from here”, said Leo Moumdjian to Diario Armenia.

Presidents and Foreign Ministers in Argentina and Uruguay adhere to the 105th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide

The Presidents of Argentina and Uruguay, Alberto Fernández and Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou, sent messages from their social networks on April 24 joining the commemoration of the 105th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. So did their Foreign Ministers Felipe Solá and Ernesto Talvi. In addition, the Armenian National Committee of South America (ANCSA) in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil received the solidarity of parliamentarians, members of legislative councils and political figures who played a leading role in the recognition of the Genocide in these countries and are known for their strong support to Armenian people’s demand for justice.

On April 24, in early morning, the official account of Casa Rosada (the Presidential Palace in Argentina), made a reference to the 105th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, and President Alberto Fernández shared the tweet. "The genocide of the Armenian people must be a lesson to build a more just world," says the text in Spanish. In addition, the message mentions Law No. 26,199, which formally recognizes the Armenian Genocide and establishes April 24 as an annual day of remembrance. The Law was unanimously adopted in Congress in December 2006 and the then President Néstor Kirchner accepted without objection on January 11, 2007.

Almost at the same time, the Argentine Foreign Ministry also published a message in which it stated that "this date unites the Armenian and Argentine people in the collective memory" of the 105th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. "Without memory there is no better future for humanity," concludes the message. The Argentine Ministry of Education, in turn, published digital material on Armenian Genocide for teachers and educators.

Since President Raúl Alfonsín recognized the Armenian Genocide in September 1987, the Executive Power had occasionally sent indirect messages in support of the commemoration of the Genocide. President Néstor Kirchner played a leading role in stopping short any Turkish pressure to veto the law that recognized the crime; this was not the case of president Carlos Saúl Menem, who in 1995 vetoed a similar law after a special delegation from the Turkish National Assembly travelled especially to Argentina and met with him. Likewise, only except for Rafael Bielsa and Jorge Taiana, Argentine Foreign Ministers were reluctant to publicly mention the Genocide to avoid diplomatic problems with Turkey. Both messages from the Presidential Palace and the Foreign Ministry on April 24, therefore, have establish a historical antecedent, a step forward for the Armenian Cause in a country that so far is the only one where the Genocide is recognized at the level of Executive, Legislative and Judicial Powers. 

In Uruguay, President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou published on his social networks a message dedicated to the 105th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. "Today is a day of memory and reflection for Armenians and for all humanity," wrote the president. "A big hug to the entire Armenian community in our country that has done so much for the cause." His Vice, Beatriz Argimón, recalled that on April 24 "the 105º anniversary of the Armenian Genocide is commemorated, and to this day, the claim for justice remains in force." "This year also, marks the 55º anniversary since Uruguay officially recognized it as such," she added. Uruguay’s Foreign Minister Ernesto Talvi also underlined the country’s singularity as the first one to recognize the Genocide and mentioned the “one million victims”. His Vice, the Minister of Defense and the President of the Senate in turn sent solidarity messages.

Uruguay was the first country to have a law supporting the Armenian claims based on the Treaty of Sèvres where the recognition of the Genocide is implicit and clearly worded in the arguments. In addition to the 55th anniversary of the law, the Armenian community in Uruguay mentioned also 20 years of a special session within the Parliament to commemorate the Genocide, though understandably this year in COVID-19 lockdown conditions there was no session.

ANCSA in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil reached out to MPs, senators, political leaders, public figures, judges, intellectuals and artists who in social media expressed their solidarity with the 105th anniversary of the Genocide. While each message was shared immediately all along the day marking a special feature of the 105th virtual celebration, ANCSA later in the day prepared a compiled presentation including the pictures of 28 Argentine MPs of all political sectors -Peronists, Radicals, Socialist, Center-right, and Leftist; 8 Brazilian representatives in legislative and municipal bodies from the Social Liberal Party, Workers’ Party, Communists, Greens, Republicans and Social Democrats; 1 Uruguayan MP from the National Party; 1 Socialists from Chile; and 1 from Paraguay (Democratic Progressive Party).

Leandro Despouy, a defender of the Armenian Cause, dies at 72

The sad news of the death of Leandro Despouy invaded all the newsrooms yesterday afternoon and had a special impact on the Armenian community of Argentina.

Leandro Despouy was one of the main promoters of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the United Nations in 1985. As an Argentine ambassador to the government of Raúl Alfonsín and a member of the UN Human Rights Subcommittee, he played a fundamental role in the approval of the "Whitaker Report" that led to the historic recognition of the UN.

“In August 1985, as a member of the UN Human Rights Subcommittee and as a diplomat of the new democracy led by President Alfonsin, I participated in the thorny debate that culminated in consecrating the international recognition of the Genocide of Armenians by the United Nations”, wrote Despouy in Clarín newspaper in 2015.

“The debate in the UN Subcommittee was one of the most prolonged and turbulent in its history,” states Despouy in his report and adds that during the course of the discussions, acting as General Rapporteur, he refers to the solidarity of Argentina with Armenian victims and defends that the appointment to a paragraph that described the massacres of Armenians perpetrated between 1915 and 1923 as "the first genocide of the twentieth century" is not replaced. That paragraph unleashed a fierce offensive of Turkish diplomacy, which had already suppressed it from a previous report in 1979.

Then he said that he agreed with some colleagues and that after the resolution was approved, the Turkish ambassador congratulated him as a diplomat but told him that the Turkish people would never forgive him for what he had just done.

In 2010, the president of Armenia, Serge Sarkisian, presented him with the Mjitar Gosh award, the highest in the country, for his significant contributions to the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

In 2015 he received the Jrimian Hairig distinction awarded by the Armenian National Council with former judge Leon Carlos Arslanian. On that occasion, he said that the resolution of the United Nations “broke with historical denialism, to which Turkish diplomacy had deposited much of its international effort ”and recalled that until that moment “the words Armenian Genocide had never been pronounced in a public sphere of the international scene”.

“ Leandro was eternally grateful for the unconditional nature of the affection that the Armenian community gave him for working towards the recognition of the genocide they suffered, ”said Graciela Dubrez, Despouy's life partner, to Diario ARMENIA newspaper .

“The struggle for the validity of human rights was a way of life for him. It was his lay catechism. He believed blindly in the rule of law,” Dubrez continued. "He was a quixote fighting for Human Rights, an idealist," she concluded.

Alfonso Tabakian, Director of the Armenian National Commitee of South America said: “We regret the loss of Leandro Despouy, a brave man who endured and did not fear threats. A defender of human rights and the Armenian cause. A man who began to break down denialism in the international spheres”.

The Oldest Armenian Newspaper in South America, Diario Armenia, Announced the Digitalization of its Historic Archives

Diario Armenia, the oldest Armenian newspaper in the community of South America, announced on November 19 a project to digitize all its historical issues.

During an event of the Armenian National Committee of South America in which Argentine journalists who deal with Armenian issues were awarded, the journalist and former Director of Diario Armenia, Jorge Kazandjian, received a special recognition for his 18 years of experience in the newspaper. Kazandjian will now be heading the project to digitize the Diario Armenia archive, supported and financed by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Under the slogan "The history of the Armenian community available to everyone", the files will be available for free on a website. In that sense, Khatchik DerGhoughassian, one of the promoters of the project, called on all the institutions of the community to participate in the digitalization.

Diario Armenia was founded in 1931 and has published continuously more than 13,000 editions for almost 90 years. The newspaper is currently published in Spanish and Armenian, with a project to add the English language to its website. This year, Jorge Kazandjian retired and Pablo Kendikian, who edits the news agency Prensa Armenia, took over as new Director.

HDP Deputies Garo Paylan and Ebru Günay gave Speeches at the Argentine Congress

Deputies Garo Paylan and Ebru Günay of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) of Turkey delivered strong statements during a conference at the National Congress of Argentina on Wednesday, August 15.

"The same genocide against the Armenians 105 years ago, could be repeated today against the Kurds," said Garo Paylan. "I am very grateful for Argentina's recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Many countries recognized it, but did this stop our pain? We will achieve justice when the Turkish Parliament recognizes the Armenian Genocide," said the Deputy. "Only a truly democratic Turkey will recognize the genocide against the Armenian people."

Ebru Günay said that the HDP party has gender parity and that those accused of gender violence or those who exercise polygamy are not allowed to participate in it. "We are fighting for women in a region where patriarchy is very strong," said Günay. "It is very difficult to fight for the rights of different peoples in an almost fascist environment."

Garo Paylan and Ebru Günay are participating in a tour in South America that includes Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Brazil. They met with Uruguayan Vice President Lucia Topolansky and former President Jose "Pepe" Mujica between August 13 and 14.

The Armenian Community of Argentina Denounces that Turkish Airlines Sponsors River Plate to Enhance the Image of Erdogan

After Turkish Airlines signed a contract with the Argentine football club River Plate, one of the most important in the country, to be its main sponsor, the Armenian community of Argentina issued a statement on August 1 in which they denounced that "Turkish Airlines landed in Argentine football to enhance the image of the current government of Turkey."

"Turkish Airlines, a state-owned company in Turkey, represents the interests of the Recep Tayyip Erdogan regime, a denialist and authoritarian government that persecutes and imprisons opponents and journalists," says the statement signed by IARA - Armenian Institutions of the Argentine Republic, the space that coordinates all the Armenian institutions of the country.

"The intention of the Turkish Airlines company to disembark in Argentine football is to 'wash' the image of the current government of Turkey, strongly questioned by the international human rights organizations," added the statement.

In that sense, they recalled that "most Argentine football clubs always showed gestures of solidarity and fraternity to the Armenian community, formed by refugees from the Armenian Genocide."

"Just as we know the delicate economic situation that Argentine clubs are going through, we also believe in the social values ​​that these institutions transmit and represent," the text concludes.
